MMJ Info

What we intend for this page is to give you the real facts about marijuana’s medical benefits and to pay respects and give credit where it is due. Doctors Tashkin, Melamede, McAllister, Abrams, Mechoulam, Guzman, Hergenrather, Bearman, Grinspoon, and several others have all done some great research dealing with a wide range of uses. We will post pertinent information under our “Medical” Category in the future, and we’ll continue our Doctors’ tribute and research compiling on this page as well.
First, we’d like to mention that the US Health Department holds several patents for cannabinoids, which are basic elements of the cannabis or marijuana plant. What we found on the US Patent Office’s website is quite profound. Indeed, this patent for “Cannabinoids as Antioxidants and Neuroprotectants” states in part, “The cannabinoids are found to have particular application as neuroprotectants, for example in limiting neurological damage following ischemic insults, such as stroke and trauma, or in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and HIV dementia.” The “Other References” and “Claims” freely offered by the Health Dept. clearly prove that they know that cannabis does in fact have medicinal value, and the US Patent Office approved the patent by these findings.
A search for all patents with the word “cannabinoid” in the title turned up 119 results on January 7, 2011, and now 125 on January 27th. Six new cannabinoid related patents in just the past 20 days! UPDATE: 2/16/2012, there are now 148 cannabinoid patents. Many are not for cannabinoids themselves, but rather the cannabinoid receptors we are all born with and other elements reacting to them. However, these facts do further validate the fact that there is no lack of government approved research on marijuana.
What If Cannabis Cured Cancer
On to the doctors, their research, and videos. Let’s start with the documentary, What If Cannabis Cured Cancer by Len Richmond. It is by far one of the best collections of cannabinoid research to date, very detailed and definitive, and you get to hear from MANY world renowned cannabis researchers.
The Science of Cannabis
Dr. Donald Abrams, whom has conducted several NIDA funded studies, gives a wonderful analysis of the current medical marijuana, or cannabinoid research in this piece. Find out more about the California Cannabis Research Medical Group and the Society of Cannabis Clinicians, O’Shaughnessy’s Journal ( A Global Medical Journal of sorts all to do about cannabis ), and GW Pharma’s extensive research here and on Project CBD‘s website, which is where Dr. Abrams’ video is shared from.
Cannabis Science, Inc.
Dr. Robert Melamede of Cannabis Science, Inc. (CBIS on the stock market), is leading the way to whole plant, phytocannabinoid based pharmaceutical products. Their research is quite extensive.
Dr. Tashkin
Dr. Donald Tashkin’s NIDA funded study was to compare cancer rates in non-smokers, tobacco smokers, marijuana smokers, and dual smokers. Going in, he believed that marijuana smokers would have the highest rate of cancer, but ended up surprising himself with the actual results. Not only was there virtually no correlation between smoking marijuana and lung cancer, the results even suggested some protective effects. Watch him tell it in his own words above.
California Pacific Medical Center
Dr. Sean McAllister’s research got some media coverage in late 2007. He leads the team’s research highlighted in the short video above. He and others at the California Pacific Medical Center have research with preliminary results of tumor cell growth reduction using “many different classes of cannabinoid compounds that work through specific cellular receptors.”
Dr. Mechoulam
Dr. Raphael Mechoulam was the first to isolate THC, or Delta9 Tetrahydrocannabinol in 1964. He is recognized as one of the world’s experts on cannabinoid-based medicines. More info about his work can be found here. Below is his presentation on Cannabinoid System in Neuroprotection
More
Dr. Lester Grinspoon is one of the most influential marijuana activists of all time. He is the Associate Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and the author or co-author of over 160 journal articles. He has a list of medical uses for cannabis that is in the thousands. Here is a Guest Editorial of his from the Journal of American Medical Association, and I strongly recommend his website, RX Marijuana, particularly this page to read more about Dr. Grinspoon himself.
Dr Manuel Guzman, whom is featured in the first video on this page, has done tremendous work at Complutense University in Madrid, Spain. They are taking the lead on cannabinoid research, doing animal trials, curing cancer! Here is his team’s submission to the National Institute of Health regarding cannabis and glioma, or brain cancer. The report is based off of their in-vivo treatment studies using mice, and from tumor biopsies that were obtained from 2 recurrent glioblastoma multiforme patients who had been treated with THC.
We feel that this is just a short list of credible resources, but adequate enough to validate the fact that marijuana genuinely is an effective medication. Any questions or notable exclusions, please feel free to let us know below!
Here are some additional links pertaining to the efficacy of medical marijuana. This section will most likely grow as quickly as our movement has lately, so stop back once in a while.

Great info, man! I hope everyone learns the truth soon!
Hi there everyone, I’m new on here and excited to be a part of the discussion!
A closed mind is like a closed book; just a block of wood. (Chinese proverb)

Yes, Clarity, I agree with Dr. Grinspoon that there’s no need to proceed with 100% belief that it will cure cancer. In Dr. Guzman’s study, 1/3 of the mice with THC injected brain tumors still died just as quicklly as the control group. However, 1/3 lived substantially longer, and the other 1/3 WERE cured! And all this without a SINGLE negative side effect! Here’s an update on the clinical human trials, http://www.cannabis-med.org/studies/ww_en_db_study_show.php?s_id=193 . The average survival of the nine glioblastoma multiforme patients from the beginning of cannabinoid administration was around 6 months. The tumors were injected daily with THC, which inhibited tumour-cell proliferation in vitro and decreased tumour-cell Ki67 immunostaining when administered to two patients. This is by far not a cure, but, keep in mind, this 6 month extension was AFTER all current medicine had failed. So these patients had more than just cancer to deal with, these patients were heavily poisoned and were likely each given less than a month to live, though I am speculating there, that’s what they told my girlfriend in ’96, and they were unfortunately right. Cannabinoids as a FIRST treatment is the test that we need to see next, and they need to start using Cannabidiol (CBD), as it has been shown by several Doctors, including Dr. McAllister, to limit cancer cell growth, too. One day we will all know what the truth is, but I know which way I lean, even for no other reason than their resistance to even let us TRY studies to show efficacy. That is ILLEGAL for them to do so, and that says a LOT to me, considering all the evidence that there is…
Thank you so much for this great information and this great site! I can only hope and pray it gets passed for everyone (including myself) suffering from the laws that make no sense! Marijuana is the only thing that has EVER helped my pain relief beyond the prescriptions I was prescribed without causing more problems in the mean time.. I spent a long time feeling ashamed that I turned to marijuana use but its wrong that I even had to… Thank you again
TY for this wonderful site! I was wondering if as of today memorial day 2011 if we actually have 2 avenues towards legal mmj in Ohio? I read where bill 412 is in OH state congress but it died there last year and then there is a ballot inituitive going on? Does this need more signatures, is it done? can we have some real up to the date info so we can actually do something NOW before we just read about it failing? I have used the NORML’s mail your rep thing but the ballot backed by Progressive Ins. fame ??? does it need help and how can we, i cant find anything on this issue?
